And now there are also rumors that Tata will soon bring back Tata Sumo in its new variant which will be an electric Tata Sumo.
Since Tata is planning to launch new EV cars in India like Tata Curvv EV, Tata Harrier EV, Tata Altroz EV and Tata Sierra EV in the next 2 years, it seems that the news of Tata Sumo is in a favorable position and fans are waiting for its confirmation.
So will Tata Sumo make a comeback in electric variant? Let’s find out everything about Tata Sumo EV below:
This is the time when electric vehicles are dominating the roads. The country’s leading vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors has also not been untouched by this revolution. The company has introduced many of its vehicles in electric versions. But one thing that is surprising for everyone is the rumors of the return of the company’s popular SUV Tata Sumo.
Who can forget Tata Sumo?
Launched in the early 90s, this vehicle was known for its durability and capability. Although its production stopped over time, now it seems that Tata Motors is planning to bring it back in a new avatar in various color options. Not only this, there are rumors that this new avatar will be electric and packed with hi-tech features.
What is the truth after all?
The rumors of electric Sumo gain even more strength when we look at the recent announcements of Tata Motors. The company has said that it plans to electrify its entire range in the next few years. Apart from this, Tata has also recently announced its new Born Electric platform.
Under this new platform, Tata is planning to launch Tata Curvv EV, Tata Harrier EV, Tata Altroz EV and Tata Sierra EV in 2025 and 2026. As the concept variants of these EV cars already revealed, people are now waiting for Sumo EV news and might be it will also confirmed.
Part of Tata’s electric campaign
If the rumours are true, the electric Sumo could be a key part of Tata’s electric campaign. Reintroducing an old and respected name would not only be a big marketing push but would also attract fans of the old Sumo.
But is it just a rumour? There has been no official announcement from Tata Motors. However, some leaked patent applications have hinted at an electric SUV that incorporates design elements from the Sumo.
Redesigned design
If the Sumo returns, it is expected to be a redesigned version of the old design. It will include the latest safety and connectivity features. Also, being powered by an electric motor, it will be quieter and more efficient.
What could be good news for Sumo fans is that its sturdy body and off-road capabilities will remain intact. However, its seating arrangement and interiors could be completely redesigned.
Apart from that a big pack of battery will be placed under the floor which will give a range of 400-500 km in 1 full charger. The expected battery capacity of this car would be around 60-75 kWh and same as the other Tata cars, the Tata Sumo Ev will be available in MR (Mid-Range) and LR (Long-Range).
Market challenges
If the electric version of Tata Sumo hits the market, it will have to compete with competing electric SUVs. Vehicles like Mahindra XUV400 and Hyundai Creta Electric are already on the roads. So, Tata has to strike the right balance in terms of price and features.
Expected ex-showroom price of Tata Sumo EV will vary from Rs 18 Lakh to 25 Lakh and it might be give tough fight to Mahindra Thar EV which the company has planned to launch in 2026!
The demand for electric vehicles is increasing in the Indian market, and companies are trying to capitalize on this opportunity. If Tata Sumo comes back in electric form, it could create another history. However, there is no official confirmation from the company yet, but fans are hopeful.
Earlier it was expected that the news about the electric Tata Sumo 2024 release date will be announced soon but as the Tata team is busy launching the Curve, Harrier, Altroz and Sierra, it seems like the news of the Tata Sumo EV variant has been pushed to 2025 or 2026 and there is no confirmation on it yet.
