EV car charging cost

What is an EV car charging cost in India?

Car buyers are now shifting to electric fuel, hence the question regarding EV car charging cost looks legit, as it can give an idea of how much you have to pay to charge EV cars at home or at the charging stations.

In India, the charging cost of an EV will vary state by state, and secondly, it will depend on what battery capacity variant of the EV car you own. Now to give an idea, we will take the example of the Tiago EV, which is one of the top selling cars in India and the first choice of every customer.

At Home EV Car Charging Cost

At home, you charge the vehicle with an AC charger… either 3.3 kW AC or 7.2 kW AC. An AC charge takes more time as compared to DC fast charging, but this option is much cheaper than charging stations as in every state of India, for domestic connection the 1 unit costs around Rs 6 to Rs 10, which is 50% cheaper than the commercial unit rate.

Key points to remember:

  • 1 unit = 1 kWh
  • Avg cost of 1 unit = Rs 8/unit
  • Battery capacity = 19.2 kWh

So if you are at home and charging a Tiago EV car via the 3.3 kW AC charger, then from 0 – 100%, a total of 19 units will be consumed, and this full charge would cost you Rs 152 to Rs 160 only.

In case you own a long range model having a battery capacity of 24 kWh, then this will consume 24 units and it will cost Rs 192 to Rs 200 only. The same if you own a Nexon EV having a 40 kWh battery capacity, then it will consume 40 units which will cost Rs 320 for 1 full charge!

Apart from that, if you prefer to charge an EV car using a 7.2 kW AC charger, then the charging cost would be the same. There is no extra unit that will be consumed (you just have to apply for a 3 phase electricity meter).

Note: If you charge the EV car at home then per km will cost 1 rupee only.

At Charging Stations EV Car Charging Cost

The charging stations offer DC charging facilities, hence the cost to charge an EV car at the charging stations is a bit more expensive compared to home. Another thing is, it depends on what location you are at or what vendor is available, the price will vary from Rs 15 – 25/unit or even higher in some premium locations.

The price might be even higher than Rs 25, if you choose a 25 kW DC fast charger or 50 kW DC fast charger.

Key points to remember:

  • 1 unit = 1 kWh
  • Avg cost of 1 unit = Rs 18/unit
  • Battery capacity = 19.2 kWh

So here, an EV car with a battery capacity of 19.2 kWh will consume 19.2 units and this will cost around Rs 350 for a full charge from 0 to 100%, while if you own an EV car having a battery capacity of 24 kWh then this will cost you Rs 432 for 1 full charge.

Note: Charging at charging stations with commercial rates will cost 2 rupees per km.

That’s a rough idea on EV charging cost. Did we miss anything to highlight here? Please let us know in the feedback section and don’t forget to share!
