Is EV car successful in India

Recent sales figures of EV cars show that electric cars are performing well in the Indian auto sector market. But do sales figures mean whether an EV car is successful in India? We have spoken to some car owners and based on that we will tell you about the status of EV cars and also tell you what challenges they faced.

Year by year, sale figures indicate that people are now looking for EV cars more than petrol ones. But are EV car owners really happy with their decision? What are the real-life challenges that an EV car owner faces? Is the EV car really successful in India? Let’s uncover everything one by one.

First of all, I would like to highlight that electrical car sales do not claim that the EV car are successful in India. It is a common nature of a customers that whenever a new product launched by a company, then some customers show their interest and buy it with a bang without thinking what will happen next.

But the real challenges users face when they drive EV cars in the existing infrastructure. Here based on the EV infrastructure condition (either mature or immature) we can say that the EV car is successful or not in India.

  • If the person is doing great with the car, not facing any problem while driving, while traveling then YES it is a successful product.
  • But if EV car owner faces problem each & every day or once in month while driving the car on road, while driving car from home to office or while driving car on long road trip, then it is not a successful product.

So now if we talk about Is EV car successful in India?, Then its answer is YES or NO. The EV car somewhere successful in India as on some routes, the EV infrastructure is fully furnished with latest fast charging stations where you can park multiple cars at once and charge quickly.

Why YES?

Example: If you are living in big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi NCR, Noida, Gurgaon, and Bangalore then you’re not going to face any issue, because in these cities; the charging stations are available at each 5 KM and you can easily park car and charge it quickly.

I live in North India, and I was traveling with my uncle in EV car named Citroen eC3 from Delhi to Amritsar. Though it was a long journey but thanks to the better and well managed EV infrastructure. In North India at national highway 44 (NH 44), the connectivity is quite good and you can charge EV car at the charging stations or at dhabas with fast DC charger. So while you eat, your car will be charged!

Similarly if you are traveling from Delhi to Jaipur via electric car, then you are not going to face any issue. The charging infrastructure is even good on this route (not like NH44 but fair enough). So once your Ev car battery drops to 25% then start hunting the nearest charging station and charge car!

Why NO?

Now the bad news is…,  if you belong to a small city or planning your trip in small city then you might face some issues because in some small cities the infrastructure is not yet developed or under development. So here charging would be a big issue and you can charge your car only at selected locations.

So it is advisable that living in a city where EV infrastructure is not yet developed, buying an EV car will be a nightmare for you. Hence, you can see that most of the customers who buy EV are from big cities because there they get better services and they charge EV without any frustration.

So the overall success of an EV car depends on how smoothly you are using it. If no issue in charging, yes it is a good, but if charging is a nightmare or living in a flood area then it is a failed one.

I would like to give an update on that recently in Interim Budget 2024, it has been announced by the government that we are planning to make EV infrastructure better. So government of India has raised some fund for that and when this will happen the EV infrastructure will be developed  in small cities too. And when all this will happen, everybody will show their interest to buy more EVs and this will be a big successful. We have to wait for that, it is a dream project and will take 1 decade!

But for the current scenario, are the EV successful in India? So it’s a sure, sure answer that somewhere it is successful where connectivity is fine and well managed. But for complete successful we have to wait for some years like we have to wait for 10 years and in near 2040 EV cars will run on the road and take over the petrol cars!
