Before buying an EV car, the car buyers often question about how much does it cost to charge an EV car. This gives a clear idea regarding how the electric car is better than petrol, how much you can save in next 5 years, and what would be the charging cost for 1 full charge.
In India, the cost of charging an electric car (EV Car) varies from state to state and also depends on what capacity of EV car you own (like mid-range or long-range). As an illustration, we have done an analysis; so let’s have a look at the car that has a battery capacity of 19.2 kWh.
Cost to charge an EV car At Home
The one of best and cost-saving option is home and most common chargers that we use to charge ev cars at home are the 3.3 kW AC and 7.2 kW Fast AC. And in every state in India, one residential connection costs between Rs. 6 and Rs. 10 per unit, which is 50% less than the cost of a commercial unit.
Key points to remember:
- 1 unit = 1 kWh
- Avg cost of 1 unit = Rs 8/unit
- Battery capacity = 19.2 kWh
So if you are at home and charging a electric car having battery capacity of 19.2 kWh via the 3.3 kW AC charger, then from 0 – 100%, a total of 19 units will be consumed, and this full charge would cost you Rs 160 to Rs 200 only.
In case you own a long range model having a battery capacity of 24 kWh, then this will consume 24 units and it will cost Rs 192 to Rs 240 only. The same if you own an EV car having a 40 kWh battery capacity, then it will consume 40 units which will cost Rs 320-400 for 1 full charge!
Apart from that, the cost of charging an EV vehicle with a 7.2 kW AC charger would be the same. No additional unit will be used; all you need to do is apply for a three-phase power meter.
Note: Charging an electric car at home will only cost one rupee per kilometer.
Cost to charge an EV car at Charging Station
Since the charging stations provide DC charging capabilities, fueling an EV car there will cost a little more than charging it at home. Another point is that prices might range from Rs 15 to Rs 25 per unit, or even more in certain upscale areas, depending on where you are and which vendor is accessible.
The price might be even higher than Rs 25, if you choose a 25 kW DC fast charger or 50 kW DC fast charger.
Key points to remember:
- 1 unit = 1 kWh
- Avg cost of 1 unit = Rs 18/unit
- Battery capacity = 19.2 kWh
In this case, an EV car with a 19.2 kWh battery will use 19.2 units and will cost about Rs 350 for a full charge from 0% to 100%. In contrast, an EV car with a 24 kWh battery will cost you Rs 432 for a single full charge.
Note: EV car charging cost at the charging stations with commercial rates will cost 2.5 rupees per km to 3.33 rupee per km.
That’s an average cost of EV car charging in India at home or at the nearest charging stations or shopping malls or hotels. Did we miss anything to highlight here?
